Northumbria
Northumbria [Northumbria] BrE NAmE an area of northern Britain ruled by kings from the 7th to the 9th centuries AD. It was famous at that time for its monasteries. The name Northumbria is still sometimes used to mean north-east England and south-east Scotland, especially in books, etc. written for tourists.
