salt cellar

ˈsalt cellar [salt cellar salt cellars] BrE NAmE noun
1. (BrE) (NAmE ˈsalt shaker)a small container for salt, usually with one hole in the top, that is used at the table
2. (NAmE)a small open dish containing salt

Word Origin:
late Middle English: from ↑salt + obsolete saler, from Old French salier ‘salt-box’, from Latin salarium, originally denoting a Roman soldier's allowance to buy salt, from sal ‘salt’. The change in spelling of the second word was due to association with ↑cellar.
