Bankside [Bankside] BrE NAmE
an area on the south bank of the River ↑Thames in London, England. It is between Southwark Bridge and the area generally known as the ↑South Bank. It is where London’s theatres were in the time of Shakespeare because they were not allowed in the city itself. Since the opening of ↑Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre at the end of the twentieth century the area has become a popular place to visit and is linked to the City of London by the Millennium Bridge, a new footbridge.
